Top 10 Weather Stories of 2018

Postby Glacier » Tue Sep 04, 2018 1:54 pm

We know this will be coming around the end of December, so let's get a jump on it. Just going from memory here:
- Snowiest February on record in the interior.
- Massive near record snowpacks in the interior.
- major flooding and record river levels in the BC interior in May.
- Worse fire season on record, and lots of smoke.
- Extreme heat in August in BC and Alberta. Places all over hit 40C that had never done so in the past. eg. Cranbrook, BC.

Your turn...

Nice find Melting ice man so with all those hot smokey days no records for YXX not to mention the late Feb. snowfall l thought for sure would be at least a daily record. Also l'm surprised that Willy's puddle hottest August temp. was only 33.8c. :o

Abby is right, these are only monthly records. Daily records happen so often that I tend to ignore them. weatherstats.ca has 15 different variables, so even at monthly records, you would expect a new record every 4 months at Abbotsford. It's quite remarkable that there hasn't been a new monthly record in well over a year.

As for Willy's puddle, remember that the airport is 1000ft above the city. Check out the Wikipedia climate section for Williams Lake. It shows both the airport and the valley bottom station. Notice a few things:

  • The AVERAGE daily maximum in the valley is about 4 degrees hotter than at the airport in the summer months. The valley station closed in 2002, so it has missed the hottest 15 year period on record.
  • AUGUST was low hanging fruit for Williams Lake (to use Abby_wx's language). The all time record for August was LOWER than the all time record for July, June, May, and even September! The new record is higher than the June record, but still lower than the May and September records!
  • The temperature can be as high as 41C in the valley, but the airport has never been above the all time record of 35.8C (set in September 1988).

More recent weather stories:

- Massive snowstorm hits Alberta, marking the snowiest September on record in Calgary.
- Same snowstorm hits the Cariboo with record abounts of snow in places.
- Extremely cold weather in September with all time coldest September maximum being set in the the first half of the month in the interior (places like Chetwynd)
- Wettest November on record in Quesnel.
- Coldest all time October and November temperature set in Newfoundland & Labrador.
- No monthly weather records set on the south coast in 2018. Come on, let's jinx that one!

Correction: With -33.6C in Wabush Lake this year, the all-time record low was not beaten in NL.
The record is -35.0C in Menihek Rapids on November 30, 1956.

What constitutes a monthly record? It seems like there's a lot of possible ones, so it's hard to believe that absolutely none were set.

Record high, record low, record high mean, record low mean, record high avg max, record low avg max, record low avg min, record high avg min, record high dewpoint, record low dewpoint, record high avg dewpoint, record low avg dewpoint, record high humidty, record low humidity, record high avg humidity, record low avg humidity, record high humidex, record low windchill, record high mean windspeed, record low mean windspeed, record high wind gust, record high rainfall, record low rainfall, record high snowfall, record low snowfall, record high number of days with precip, record low number of days with precip, record high sunshine hours, record low sunshine hours... did I miss any?
