Environment Canada Started Rounding Temperatures, But Why?

Postby Glacier » Fri Mar 23, 2018 8:06 am

Okay, so I noticed that MANY airport weather stations that used to record the temperatures to the nearest 0.1C now do it to the nearest 0.5C! Out of curiosity, I clicked back, and noticed that two years ago this month (March 2016) this switch happened. Does anyone know why?

Examples:

Campbell River: Changed on the 22nd of March, 2016.

Castlegar: Changed on the 10th of March.

Blue River: Changed on the 22nd.

Chetwynd: Changed on the 23rd.

Nanaimo: Changed on the 22nd.

Smithers: 21st.

Whistler: 12th.

These are not the only stations to change over the years. For example, Powell River changed a year earlier on June 10th, 2015.

Yes, well, it seems that the stations USED TO BE AUTOMATIC and then went manual, because only manual stations round to the nearest 1C or 0.5C.

I thought it was the opposite.

I know three different people who ran manual stations (two are now dead), and they rounded to the nearest 0.5C. You manually look at the thermometer and round because the thermometer is an alcohol or mercury thermometer with lines every degree.

Here are some automated stations. Notice that they round to the nearest 0.1C because they don't rely on eye balls to guess where the mercury is sitting...

Yes, indeed! Of course, I know that... I didn't think about it before writing!
