The Fraser River used to freeze over all the way to the mouth of the river. Records show the Fraser River was completely frozen over in the Lower Mainland on January 30, 1893. The river froze over again in the 1920s, as this photo from the era shows the old New Westminster bridge in the background and people skating and playing hockey on the river. The river has not frozen over at New Westminster since the 1920s.

If 1949/50 was by far the coldest winter on record (as the data says it was), why would the river freeze in the 1920s but not 1950???

Friday marks the 102-year anniversary of Seattle's greatest one-day measured snow storm when 21.5 inches fell in Seattle on Feb. 2, 1916.....the blizzard hit on the evening of Feb. 1 just as people were leaving work and 24 hours later, Seattle had nearly two feet of new snow. Overall, the three-day storm totaled 29" when all was said and done.

Seattle. Feb 2, 1916.

I'm certain it froze over in 1950. No reason to think it didn't.

Burrard Inlet was completely frozen over in Port Moody during the '68/69 winter to the point where people drove their cars over the ice.
