Alerts: Special Weather Statements

Postby Abby_wx » Fri Feb 28, 2014 5:19 pm

Fraser Valley - west including Abbotsford
11:30 AM PST Friday 28 February 2014
Special weather statement for
Fraser Valley - west including Abbotsford issued

Wintery mix weather pattern this weekend.

Environment Canada is monitoring a weather system that is forecast to reach the South Coast this weekend. Currently a push of Arctic air is spreading to the South Coast. East winds gusting up to 70 km/h are forecast to persist through today and Saturday in the Fraser Valley. Northeast winds of 50 to 70 km/h are also expected through Howe Sound bringing a cooler and drier airmass into the region.

A developing low pressure system will move toward the coast on Saturday. With freezing levels close to the surface, precipitation should fall as snow to start. The centre of the low will pass through the South Coast on Sunday bringing heavier precipitation onshore. The timing of the change of precipitation from snow to rain is uncertain at this point. Wintery mix with a risk of freezing rain is possible. Snow is likely to transition into rain by Monday. Warmer and wetter weather pattern is expected next week.

Forecast certainty with regards to the location, amount, and timing of snow will increase as the weekend nears.

The public, especially those with travel plans this weekend, are advised to stay tuned to the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at http://WWW.WEATHER.GC.CA. send your weather reports at #bcstorm.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

The funny thing is the special weather statement says it has ended before it has even begun... does that mean they are backpeddaling their original forcast?

Special weather statements come before warnings I think.

Special weather statement in effect for:

Metro Vancouver

Rain and strong winds tonight...

A powerful October storm will arrive on the South Coast tonight. Rainfall with this storm will not be extreme over Metro Vancouver.

The rain of the past ten days plus the forecast heavy rain in the north shore mountains tonight - possibly totalling 70 to 100 millimetres - has prompted the BC River Forecast Centre to issue a high streamflow advisory for the north shore, Howe Sound and the Sea to Sky corridor from Squamish to Whistler. See the advisory at WWW.BCRFC.ENV.GOV.BC.CA/WARNINGS

A wind warning has been issued for Victoria, Metro Vancouver, Howe Sound, the Sunshine Coast, East Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands. Early season wind storms often damage trees causing downed power lines and local power outages.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

The remains of hurricane Ana will approach the BC coast as a tropical depression early in the week.

Hurricane Ana will become a tropical depression before it impacts the BC coast late Monday and Tuesday. The weather associated will be typical of an intense fall storm where storm warnings are likely for the marine areas with corresponding wind warnings for coastal public regions. There will likely be heavy rainfalls as well with 50 to 100 mm possible through the period. Weather warnings are expected to be issued tomorrow.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.
