BC Inflation Calculator

Postby Abby_wx » Sun Sep 02, 2018 9:52 pm

Is this bogus, or what?

http://inflationcalculator.ca/british-columbia/

I put in 2008 as the start date, and it's showing only 13.8%, or 1.25% per year. Seriously?!

I would think that the skyrocketing cost of rent alone would push inflation WAY higher than these numbers suggest. I also remember gas was around $1/litre in Vancouver back in 2008, so that's gone up by nearly 50%!!! Food prices, maybe close to 15%. Car insurance, up... hydro, up... I think the only things that hasn't changed much is electronics.

Just to add to this, the site in question was linked from a Vancouver Sun article, as "Statistics Canada". https://vancouversun.com/news/local-new ... d-eby-says

At first glance, it appears to be legit, but on closer examination, the advertisements don't look like anything sponsored by the government. Also, the lack of an HTTPS certificate is another red flag.

The site says the numbers come from Statistics Canada, but I've not been able to confirm that. They certainly appear suspiciously low, but that may be just the way Statistics Canada weights their basket of goods.
