All Time Lowest Maximum Temperature

Postby Glacier » Wed Dec 10, 2014 9:08 am

This is absolutely fascinating. We usually only refer to the all time lows that occur when we are all inside having our morning coffee, but I think more important are the all time low maximums that occur when we are outside in the afternoon.

I knew that December 1968 was a cold one, but had no idea how cold until I looked at the record low maximums. Same goes for November 1985 (coldest cold snap in my lifetime).

Here are some values for BC places with very long term weather records:

Tatlayoko Lake, BC* (POR 1928 to present) = -30.0C (-22.0F) on Tuesday, November 26, 1985.

Vernon, BC** (1900 to present) = -26.7C (-16F) on Sunday, December 29, 1968.

Summerland, BC** (1916 to present) = -24.4C (-12F) on December 28 and 29, 1968.

Agassiz, BC** (1889 to present) = -20.6C (-5F) on Friday, January 8, 1909.

Victoria, BC** (1898 to present) = -11.7C (11F) on Sunday, December 29, 1968.

* Recorded to the nearest 0.5C.
** Recorded to the nearest degree F.
