A lot of those maps seem to contradict each other. He says near normal for the coast, but his own interpretation of the ECMWF shows hot conditions. Edit: I see those were posted 16 days apart, so that might explain it. I get the feeling this summer will hit hard early. It could be one of those years...

34C in August can be okay because it cools down nicely in the late afternoon and evening. 34C in June is the worst because the sun is so high and the day so long.

Actually, there are three types of Mediterranean climates: hot, warm, and cold. Most people are only familiar with the classic Mediterranean climate -- the hottest type, which as you stated requires a mean of 22C or higher. I've read that climate change could turn us into a Mediterranean climate. There isn't enough data to prove anything yet, but this is exactly what we'd expect to happen -- warming and drying summers, and probably an extension of the dry season as well.
